The unified Israelites divided into two nations after the death of Solomon. The two nations formed are Israel and Judah, and their rulers were wicked. The two kings turned their people against God and led them into idol worship. The scripture reported,
“Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but again he made priests from every class of people for the high places; whoever wished, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places” (1 Kings 13:33). Also, “Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they provoked Him to jealousy with their sins which they committed, more than all that their fathers had done” (1 Kings 14:22).
Lesson:
God will punish a leader who diverts people’s attention from him. A leader of any capacity is expected to have the fear of God and be considerate with his leadership. Leaders are expected to utilize their influence to benefit their people and also encourage them to be godly in their practices. Also, it is the responsibility of followers to evaluate any instruction received and ensure that it is compliant with God’s laws. Both the leaders/rulers and followers/citizens are mandated to please God in whatever they do. God will not respond to excuses, and he will not exonerate anyone who fails to apply godly fear to whatever he or she does.
Prayer:
Dear God, please help me to manage my position in a fashion that will glorify you. Help me to care for people and have your fear in my heart. Let me lead by example, and let me motivate people to behave well, and please you in their endeavors. Do not let me be carried away with any honor that is associated with my position, and sin against you. Let me serve you well, and let me serve people well. Let my leadership style benefit everyone under my command. For in the name of Jesus Christ I make my requests. Amen.
