January 1 – True Love Is Essential In Christianity
Jesus Christ explained what a man (and woman) needs to inherit the kingdom of God when one lawyer attempted to trick him into validating his selfish opinion. Christ gave an astonishing response as the man asked, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 10:25). Jesus responded, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain *man* went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded *him,* and departed, leaving *him* half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to *him* and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave *them* to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:27-37).
Anyone who desires to inherit the kingdom of God must practice the true love that God requires. The person must love God with all his might; he (or she) must also love his neighbors. In fact, the basis of true love to God can be validated on how a person behaves to the people around him. If he claims to love God whom he has not seen, then he must love the people that he sees around him.
The importance of love cannot be overemphasized in Christian community! The practice of true love is not only beneficial to we humans, but it is also beneficial to God. If believers can demonstrate the true love, unbelievers will be motivated to come closer and serve our God. This, of course, is highly beneficial to God’s kingdom!
Any Christian who truly loves God and demonstrate the true love towards other people will not only be rewarded in heaven, but he (or she) will also be rewarded on earth. Jehovah will shower his benefits on the person so that everyone around him can be motivated to emulate the practice.
Dear God, please give me the ability to exercise the genuine love that will benefit your kingdom. Empower me by the Holy Spirit to love you with all my heart and also love my neighbors as myself. Please make me your true ambassador who brings glory to your Holy Name at all times. For in the name of Jesus Christ I make my request. Amen.
