God’s day of reckoning caught the people of Israel and Judah unaware. Foreign invaders stormed their cities; took them captives, and loot their properties. It was easy for the enemies to overpower them because God has stopped protecting them due to their sins. The loss of God’s protection created a vacuum that became an opportunity for the enemies. The enemy nations destroyed their land and transported them to Babylon. The people became Babylonians’ slaves. Bible reported the ordeal that nations of Israel and Judah suffered for the sake of their sins, “Now in the fifth month, on the tenth day of the month (which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, who served the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. He burned the house of the Lord and the king’s house; all the houses of Jerusalem, that is, all the houses of the great, he burned with fire. And all the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard broke down all the walls of Jerusalem all around” (Jeremiah 52:12-14).
Believers must honor God to enjoy his full benefits. No substitute for obeying God’s commandments! Meanwhile, believers have tendency to take God for granted because of the relationship they have with him; however, the end result is often disastrous. The fact that someone has a relationship with God does not mean he has to consider it a license to violate his commandment! Any child of God who values his (or her) relationship with God ought to obey his laws. Jehovah prioritizes holiness, and he can only regard whoever keeps his laws as a loyal person. Therefore, it is important that anyone who expects to enjoy God’s benefit honors his relationship with him.
Dear God, please help me to keep a good relationship with you. Don’t let me take you for granted so that I will not lose your benefits. Instill your fear in my heart, and let the Holy Spirit rule me to faithfully serve you so that I can prosper in all my ways. For in the name of Jesus Christ I make my requests. Amen.
